While the exact steps will vary from one door to another, it is best to approach the door in this order:
1. Tracks
Over time, dirt can build up on the tracks so you should clean them first with a rag. Although we wouldn’t recommend that you lubricate the tracks, as they may slip, it is important to ensure they are clean.
2. Springs
Every time the garage door is opened, the springs are subject to a lot of stress. Although they do require lubrication, we advise against overdoing this as it can lead to a lot of damage and may cause problems.
3. Hinges
Although most hinges are made of steel, you may find some made from plastic. The pivot points of steel hinges should be lubricated. However, plastic hinges can perish if they are not properly lubricated.
4. Rollers
The part that moves along the track is called the roller and it is usually made of nylon. To avoid slippages, the bearings will need some lubrication. However, you should wipe off any excess.
5. Locks
Some garage doors still have locks. If yours has, you can add some lubricant to it from time to time. You should add enough to ensure that the lubricant moves into the tumbler, but not so much that it drips onto your garage floor or car.
